On 20th April, we at MARL were pleased to support a very special evening ‘In Conversation with Sir Karl Jenkins’ and his wife Lady Carol Jenkins, professionally known as Carol Barratt.
The evening was organised and hosted by Gemma Levine, renowned photographer and author, to raise awareness and much needed funds for Lymphoedema research.
The event started with Professor Peter Mortimer appreciating Gemma’s work in raising awareness and funds for this misunderstood and underrepresented disease. Gemma’s efforts have seen an increased awareness of the charity as well as celebrity endorsements including Dame Judi Dench and Joanna Lumley. She has also inspired others to come together and support research into improving treatments.

We then heard from William Repicci, the President and CEO of the Lymphatic Education & Research Network In the US, who discussed his efforts across the pond and the importance of working together to form a united effort to lift Lymphedema further into public awareness.
Broadcaster and former Classic FM presenter John Suchet led the evening’s conversation with Sir Karl and Lady Carol, where we were treated to a fascinating insight into Sir Karl’s life as a composer, from his early work in Music for Advertising through to more recent works of which one will be played at the Coronation of King Charles III. Conversation was interspersed with excerpts from a range of Sir Karl’s work, including Adiemus, The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace and the Venetian inspired Palladio.
Lady Carol spoke about her passion for music education and delighted the audience with tales of a life led in a household of composers.
The evening concluded with a warm thanks to Gemma from St George’s Hospital Charity for organising the event and a drinks reception with the chance to talk to the team from St George’s Hospital and learn about this cause as well as make further donations if they wished.
Here at MARL we’re committed to doing what we can to support this charity and the research it is funding. The cause is close to our hearts with several members of staff having family or friends affected by the disease. We were pleased that our sponsorship supported the organisation of this night and we look forward to being a part of future events and helping to support the charity in future.
